Happy Spring! I know that a lot of our members
have had to endure an unseasonable winter and I
hope that you have thawed by now. As I write this,
our nation is once again on the brink of war. I hope
that as you are reading this that we are not at war
and that some of our loved ones have returned home
to our families. Please pray for peace now and
always. God bless you and God bless America!
By now most of you know that Barbara Henderson,
WN 1st Vice President, had to resign her office due to
health reasons. Barbara worked very hard on the
convention in Portland and became ill immediately
following. Barbara felt that it was in the best interest
of WAVES National that she resigns. Thank you,
Barbara, for your invaluable service to WAVES
National and I pray that you are back on your feet
soon. I would also like to inform our members that
Jeanne Schoonover, Region VI Representative, had
to resign her office due to health reasons. Jeanne
was the convention chairman in Cleveland in 2000. I
hope this is not a trend! Please keep Barbara and
Jeanne in your prayers for a speedy recovery. Bea
Hurley, Golden West WAVES Unit 31, has graciously
accepted the office of South California State
Director. Bea replaced Margaret “Maggie” Geddes
who passed away last year. Judy Spencer,
Tidewater Tidal WAVES Unit 152, has taken the
office of Region X Representative, which had been
vacant for quite some time. Thank you ladies.
As I reported in the February White Caps, we have
had some problems with the labels and I thought I
had the situation under control. That was not the
case. Please, if you do NOT receive your WC by the
last week of the month of publication let Gloria Galati
or I know as soon as possible. If we don’t know
about the problem, we cannot fix it.
I take this opportunity to thank Jane Masterson,
Region I Representative and member of S.L.O.
WAVES Unit 126 in California, for her contribution of
$1,000 toward the Stained Glass Window fund,
during the convention in Portland, last year. Jane
graciously donated some of her back pay from a long
overdue VA disability payment that she finally
received. THANK YOU JANE!

DUES, DUES, DUES!!! This is the last edition of
White Caps that you will receive if you have NOT
paid your 2003 WN dues. You can look at the
mailing label on this White Caps and see that on the
top line of your address is the two-digit year that your
dues are paid up to. If it still says “02” please pay
your 2003 dues NOW! This is the only means by
which one can check to see if her dues are current
without asking her Unit Treasurer or the Assistant
Treasurer. The new membership card does not
reflect a dues year-end on the label.
With the average age of our members at 70+ we
must recruit new and younger members. I say this
with my deepest respect for our older members. You
all know that a lot of our Units do not have any
younger members in their Units and the same
members must take leadership positions in the Unit
in order to stay afloat. If we want WAVES National to
continue, we must recruit, recruit, and recruit! I
cannot stress this enough. We have had a number of
Units turn in their charters in the last few years and
this will continue if we don’t fill our membership roles
now! WAVES National will celebrate twenty-five
years in 2004. Let’s celebrate it with a bang and
have more members than ever before. I am counting
on all of you and I challenge each and every Unit to
recruit at least one new member each month.
A belated “Congratulations” to the SPARs who
celebrated their 60th Anniversary on November 23,
2002 Semper Paratus -- Always Ready, and to the
women Marines who celebrated their 60th
Anniversary on February 13, 2003. Semper Fi.
Always Navy, Barb
Thought for the day:
The leadership instinct you are born with is the backbone.
You develop the funny bone and the wishbone that go
with it.
