The "One Nation Under God" was added to the Pledge in 1954, the year I got
OUT of the Navy, by the Lobbying of a Catholic group. We were in the middle of
a Cold War with the "atheistic communists". In the minds of those that passed
that amendment to the Pledge, it apparently meant that God was on our side
against those nasty commie atheists. I refuse to say that phrase, because I
never learned it that way, and consider it a self-righteous and egotistical
inclusion. God is NOT always "on our side"....much as we'd like to think so. We, the
United States, have committed our share of attrocities in the pst 200 years,
and have not always been the "good guys". Unfortunately, history (as
generally taught) seems to leave out those "bad guy" facts.
I delete any and all e-mails that reference God as being "on our side", or
that we are a "Christian Nation" or "under God". This country is secular (no
established religion) which allows everyone to worship or not, as they please.
If this was a "Christian Nation", laws would be based on Christian concepts
that all would have to obey. There would be no Freedom of Religion or from
religion. It would be a theocracy, not a democracy.
Since I am being bombarded with e-mails like the above, (about 50% have some
reference to the Christian religion or God) I am getting pretty ticked off, as
you might have guessed. I do not pass them on. The "walking the world" one I
passed on because it was cleverly done, but only to people who I knew were
devout. I have no problem with their beliefs, but they apparently think I should
believe as they do, which I don't.
Sorry to blow up, but I know the facts, and not the "spin", having lived
through that time. I was offended by it then, and I still am.
