i have no idea why we would dishearten the troops, fran -- i only know we
can do it with the "gross stupid war" mentality.

as hard as this may be for some of us to understand, a great percentage of
today's all-volunteer-force troops believe they are liberating badly
repressed people -- and they believe it is the right thing to do. they have
a sense of purpose and commitment. bombarding that sense of purpose and
commitment, we are letting them know they are wasting their time and blood
in this "gross stupid war".

i lost quite a few friends/family during vietnam, but one of my most
poignant memories is when my cousin returned -- thrilled to be home and to
have done his "duty" -- and was confronted by anti-war protestors who
destroyed his sense of purpose. i watched his face change from happy,
buoyant, glad-to-be-home, to shock and then to something i can't describe.
he never recovered.

whether i think what's going on in iraq is right or wrong, i will not make a
public statement that could do that to another one of our troops.

Why would we do that, Val? What choice do they have? No more than the guys
and gals that went to 'Nam. Those that didn't go for patriotic reasons were
drafted. Sure, there are some, usually the fanaticals, who will be their
nasty selves, but they inhabit both left and right, only on different
issues. The vast majority of people don't blame the troops...they blame the
CiC and Congress that sent their sons and daughters to war. That's where the
buck stops. I only wish it was the war-mongers that had to go....they might
not be so eager, if it was their life at risk. Fortunately for them, they
are all too old. I find the worst "chicken-hawks" never served in combat, if
in the military at all. Have never personally met a vet who wants to
experience another war....wait, I'll take that back, met one, once, who was
a mercenary.....he LOVED it. Made me wonder where his head was at. My ex
stood two tours in 'Nam....he's still having flashbacks, and carries a lot
of baggage from then. Career Marine. I, for one, would never come down on
the troops, and would ream out anyone I heard doing it.

disheartened? is there any doubt? the singularly most discouraging aspect
was encountered on their return when, instead of being welcomed home by john
q public, they were brow-beaten by the anti-war protesters who labeled them
"baby killer" et alii...

what happened to our vietnam era veterans is contemptible

and i take it we're going to do it again by letting today's vets know how
wasted we think their efforts are in this gross stupid war

Real veterans didn't do what? I encouraged every person who was in service
during Vietnam, but it was a gross stupid war---just as Iraq is gerting to
be. Thee were many Vietnam veterans who came back dishearted and that is
why they started Vietnam Veterans Against The War. They fought, they saw,
they paid and they came home and protested. No other country would have
allowed that. Having seen war hopefuly, Kerry wouldn't get us into another
no win situation like we are in now. I am not 100% happy with Kerry but I am
100% fed up with Bush and his vacilaating and lies--a NON VETERAN--who never
was in a war.
