The WAVES were Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service. We wore the same patches and stripes as the men, but since our arms were smaller our patches and stripes were also smaller. The mens uniforms were a blue black and ours were Navy Blue so the color was also different. Our hats were very different also. It was an interesting experience being able to serve our country and fill a real need. In Boot Camp, I was taught that I was a woman first and a WAVE second. We were taught to act accordingly and in my experience when we did it usually made a big difference in how the men treated us.
I learned so much and grew up so much. It was the best thing I could have done, since I couldn't afford to attend college.
